Meet the ponies

Milly

Milly

Milly is very pretty, small and she likes to wear blue ribbons in her long flowing mane and tail. Milly is married to Crunchy and they have a foal called Molly.

Echo

Echo

Echo is best friends with Milly and likes to wear daisies in her mane. She’s also very cheeky and loves to lie down and roll around in the grass. Echo is mummy to Malt Loaf.

Malt Loaf

Malt Loaf

Malt Loaf is a shy but very beautiful pony. She has very long legs and is light grey all over, with a dark grey head and a dark grey heart shape around her tail.

Molly

Molly

Molly likes to be fashionable by wearing red ribbons in her tail and mane and a ‘top knot’ on her forelock. She is mischievous and is always getting into trouble, but everyone loves her because she always remembers to say sorry.

Crunchy

Crunchy

Crunchy loves to be groomed, hugged and patted. He is very playful and really likes playing with humans. Crunchy is married to Milly.

Minstrel

Minstrel

Minstrel is quite shy and tends to let his best friend Crunchy take the lead. He’s black and white and very fine-looking. The girls secretly like him too!

Sylvie

Sylvie

Great Aunt Sylvie is very old and wise. She is brown all over with grey flecks. Sylvie is sometimes stern but very kind and all the other ponies look up to her and go to her for help and advice.

Malcolm

Malcolm

Malcom can be a bit grumpy sometimes, but is gentle really. His best friend is Fred, but he is friendly to all of the ponies – most of the time!

Fred

Fred

Fred, the Dartmoor pony, is very kind and handsome. He is reddish brown with a black mane and is loved by all – especially the girl ponies!

Gypsy

Gypsy

Gypsy likes to wear a blue scarf with sequins around her neck. She has to live away from the rest of the ponies because she is helping to look after a young pony who lives next door – but still joins in the fun!

About us

Happy Ponies is a series of 20 children's books written by Gail Yardley and illustrated by Mair Perkins, inspired by ten real life ponies living on the Isle of Wight. Self published by author Gail, in partnership with Nicola Murgatroyd, the books follow the adventures of the cute (and sometimes mischievous) Shetland ponies Sylvie, Molly, Malt Loaf, Milly, Echo, Crunchy, Minstrel, Gypsy, the slightly bigger (and sometimes grumpy) Malcolm, and their gentle Dartmoor pony friend Fred (who loves to pull a pony carriage).

Gail taught the ponies’ owner, Nicola, how to drive carriages pulled by the ponies. While on their trips out, Gail’s imagination would get the better of her and soon began imagining different characters and scenarios for the ponies. One day, she put pen to paper and the first book in the series is now in production to be launched in June 2015.
